How to improve Wi-Fi range ?

Ever since Wi-Fi technology has started to take over most of the ways to connect to internet, boosting its signal improving connection performance has always been in discussions. Wireless routers are most commonly used devices when are used for wireless connection, millions of wireless devices are used in homes and offices to access wireless internet using Wi-Fi technology.There are numerous ways which can be used to improve performance of wireless connection, and incase if you are not receiving full signal bar then there are numerous ways by which you can improve signals as well. There are following steps by which you can improve over all performance of Wireless networks and signal receiving. The first thing which should be done is to make sure that you are getting the most of your wireless router. Wireless router/switch should be placed on height by mounting it on wall preferably. Mounting it on centre of premises can improve performance as well. Any electronic device ranging 2.4Ghz which can be baby monitors, phones, Bluetooth devices, etc can create interference in communication of router resulting in decreased performance of connection. There are possibilities that your neighbor is using Wi-Fi on same spectrum, this confliction can decrease performance as well, to avoid such a scenario use different channel from your neighbor connection, if your neighbor connection channel is 12, try to use channel 1 to avoid channel interference. If things are not improved even after all these measures, then it is recommend to update your wireless router / access point. Consider buying new router with Multiple input multiple output (MIMO), or draft-n technology. There routers are specially design for greater rang then normal 802.11g standard routers, and also improves speed up to ten times. Note: You can also boost signals for your wi-fi connection by customized made antennas

WiFi with no limitation

You can use a “WiFi” network with no limitation because it can connect you worldwide. You can easily reach to your requirements with WiFi networking applications because the power consumption is very high as compared to other bandwidth. The vision of wireless network is bright with Pre-N products and high qulaity media streaming.

More faster and secure

With WiFi you can get high speed of internet because it is very fast than DSL and Cable connection you can establish a Wifi network in small space now you don’t need any professional installation just connect to a power outlet with an Ethernet cord, and start browsing. WiFi security system for Threats makes it more renewable and its tool protect your VPN and secure web page. You can easily configure the device to take better performance. The standard devices, embedded systems and network security make it more powerful.

It's convenient and every where

WiFi is a convenient technology and where the range station exists you are online during travel you can equip with a Wi-Fi network and set up shop anyplace. You will automatically connect with internet if you are near hotspot. These days WiFi exist every where with all its wonders.

Support an entire age bracket.

WiFi technology has several advantages it support an entire age bracket and create a connection between components on the same network and have ability to transfer data between the devices and enable different kind of devices such as game, MP3 player, PDA’s and much more!

Wi-Fi Fortress Technology

WiFi providing secure wireless solutions support the growth and release of a prototype mobile ad hoc wireless network for use in the wireless strategic skirmish.

Unmatched mobility and elasticity

Wi-Fi, is allowing new intensity of connectivity without giving up functions. Wi-Fi introduced various types of utilities such music streamers that transmit your music to speakers without any wire you can also play music from the remote computer or any other attached to the network. The most important now you can play online radio. Wifi technology system is rather remarkable, you can download songs, send email and transfer files expediently at sky-scraping speed and you can move your computer easily because your WiFi network has no cable to disrupt your work so we can say that it is quite easy, helpful and most of all expedient.

A new aspect in networking

WiFi has brought a new aspect in the ground of networking. The broadcast of data is completed via radio waves and the cost of cables for network lying down.Wi-Fi enable a user to get access to internet anywhere in the given location. Now you can make a network in Hotels, Libraries, colleges, universities, campus, private institutes, and coffee shops and even on a public place to make your business more profitable and connect with their client any time. WiFi makes waves for business with their highly effective cable less media.

Wi-Fi

Wireless Fidelity – popularly known as Wi-Fi, developed on IEEE 802.11 standards, is the recent technology advancement in wireless communication. As the name indicates, WI-FI provides wireless access to applications and data across a radio network. WI-FI sets up numerous ways to build up a connection between the transmitter and the receiver such as DSSS, FHSS, IR – Infrared and OFDM. The development on WI-FI technology began in 1997 when the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) introduced the 802.11 technology that carried higher capacities of data across the network. This greatly interested some of major brands across the globe such as the world famous Cisco Systems or 3COM. Initially, the price of Wi-Fi was very high but around in 2002, the IT market witnessed the arrival of a break through product that worked under the new 802.11 g standards. In 2003, IEEE sanctioned the standard and the world saw the creation of affordable Wi-Fi for the masses.

Technical Solutions

As with WLANs and Bluetooth technical solutions & improvements fall into one of two categories: software security solutions and hardware security solutions. Bluetooth software solutions focus on Personal Identification Number (PIN) and private authentications, while hardware solutions involve the use of the Bluetooth device address and link keys that reside at the link level. Again, it should be noted that hardware solutions, which generally have software components, are into simply as hardware solutions.

Operational Solutions

Since Bluetooth devices do not register when they join a network, they are invisible to network administrators. Consequently, it is difficult for administrators to apply traditional physical security measures. However, there are some security approaches that can be applied, including establishing spatial distance and securing the gateway Bluetooth devices that connect remote Bluetooth networks or devices. Establishing spatial distance requires setting the power requirements low enough to prevent a device operating on the organizations premises from having sufficient power to be detected outside physical boundaries. This spatial distance in effect creates a more secure boundary. Currently, Bluetooth devices have a useful range of approximately 30 feet. Organizations that require both high levels of security and low levels of security should maintain a secure perimeter so that on site network users can maintain secure connections in their office premises. Agencies with requirements for high levels of security should also restrict unauthorized personnel from using PDAs, laptops, and other electronic devices within the secure perimeter. (Tom karygiannis, Les Owens, Nov 2002)

Management Solutions.

The first line of protection is to provide a sufficient level of knowledge and understanding for those who will deal with WPAN & Bluetooth enabled devices & networks. Organizations using wireless personal area network technology need to establish and document security policies that address the use of Bluetooth enabled devices and the user’s responsibilities. The policy document should include a list of approved uses for WPAN’s, the type of information that may be transferred in the network, and any disciplinary actions that may result from misuse. The security policy should also specify a proper password usage scheme.

SOLUTIONS & SECURITY MEASURES FOR WPAN

Wireless Personal Area Network and other Bluetooth technologies are relatively new standard and have yet to become common in the marketplace. However, solutions and improvements are available to help secure WPAN networks. These measures include management solutions, operational solutions, and technical solutions

Loss Of Avaiability

Denial of service attacks cause in the loss of network availability for authorized users and devices. Denial of service attacks block authorized user access to system resources and network applications. Besides the typical DoS attacks directed against LANs and Internet services, Bluetooth devices are also susceptible to signal jamming. Bluetooth devices share bandwidth with microwave ovens, cordless phones, and other wireless networks and thus are exposed to interference. Malicious users can interfere with the flow of information by using devices that transmit in the 2.4 GHz ISM band. Disrupting the routing protocol prevents ad hoc network devices from negotiating the network’s dynamic topologies. Remote users may encounter jamming more frequently than on-site users. Remote users must contend with the same interference that users experience in the office. Further, since the remote environment is uncontrolled, remote devices are more likely to be in close immediacy to devices that are intentionally or unintentionally jamming their signals. Another threat associated with ad hoc devices is a battery exhaustion attack. This attack attempts to disable a device by draining its battery. A malicious user continually sends requests to the device asking for data transfers (assuming the user is part of the network topology) or asking the device to create a network. Although this type of attack does not compromise network security, it ultimately prevents the user from gaining access to the network, because the device cannot function. (Juha T. Vainio, May 25, 2000)

Loss Of Integrity

Iinfringements of integrity result from the corruption of an organization’s or user’s data. The direct effect is similar to that of a confidentiality, or disclosure, threat: a compromised network. However, integrity threats extend beyond this, involving the alteration, addition, or deletion of information, which is then passed through the network without the user’s or network administrator’s knowledge. Information that is subject to corruption includes files on the network and data on user devices. For example, a malicious user might use an untrusted device, such as a PDA, to access the address book of another PDA or laptop. However, instead of just monitoring the information, as would be the case with a disclosure threat, the malicious user alters the contact information without the owner’s knowledge or may even delete the information completely. If undetected, such attacks could result in the agency or user losing confidence in its data and system. Users should verify that their Bluetooth product does not allow automatic data synchronization to prevent the alteration of any information without the acknowledgement user of that device.

Loss Of Confidentiality

Threats to confidentiality involve, first of all, compromised Bluetooth devices. When a Bluetooth device that is part of a piconet becomes compromised (e.g., is in the possession of an unauthorized user), it may still receive information that the malicious user should not access. Moreover, the compromised device may still have network or information privileges, resulting in a compromise of the wider network as well. In the latter case, the compromised device may not only receive normal proprietary traffic but may also request that information as part of a targeted network attack. A trait of Bluetooth that makes this compromise unique is that the Bluetooth network requires device and not the user authentication to access resources. Once the device is authenticated, it is automatically connected to resources without the need for subsequent authentication. (Geoff Huston, the wireless internet)

SECURITY THREAT AND REQUIREMENTS OF WIRELESS PAN

Bluetooth offers several benefits and advantages. However, organizations must not only address the security threats associated with Bluetooth before they implement the technologies; they must also measure the vulnerabilities of the devices they allow to participate in the Bluetooth networks. Specifically, agencies need to address security concerns for confidentiality, data integrity, and network availability. Moreover, since Bluetooth devices are more likely to be managed by users that are less security conscious than administrators, they are more likely to contribute to uncontrolled security drifts. This subsection will briefly cover some of the risks to security, i.e., attacks on confidentiality, integrity, and network availability.

PAN- Personal Area Network

Personal area network (PAN) is a computer network designed for communication between computer devices (including telephones and personal digital assistants close to one person). The devices may or may not belong to the person in question. The reach of a PAN is typically a few meters. PANs can be used for communication among the personal devices themselves or for connecting to a higher level network and the Internet.Personal area networks may be wired with computer buses such as USB and FireWire. A wireless personal area network (WPAN) can also be made possible with network technologies such as IrDA and Bluetooth.

Wireless - Local Area Network

A LAN, local area network based on wireless network technology mostly referred as Wi-Fi. Unlike LAN, in WLAN no wires are used, but radio signals are the medium for communication. Wireless network cards are required to be installed in the systems for accessing any wireless network around. Mostly wireless cards connect to wireless routers for communication among computers or accessing WAN, internet.

CAN - Campus Area Network

Networking spanning with multiple LANs but smaller than a Metropolitan area network, MAN. This kind of network mostly used in relatively large universities or local business offices and buildings.

SAN- System Are Network

It links high-performance computers with high-speed connections in a cluster configuration. Also known as Cluster Area Network.

Storage Area Network

It connects servers to data storage devices through a technology like FibreChannel.

MAN- Metropolitan Area Network

A network spanning a physical area larger than a LAN but smaller than a WAN, such as a city. A MAN is typically owned an operated by a single entity such as a government body or large corporation.

WAN- Wide Area Network

As the term implies, a WAN spans a large physical distance. The Internet is the largest WAN, spanning the Earth. A WAN is a geographically-dispersed collection of LANs. A network device called a router connects LANs to a WAN. In IP networking, the router maintains both a LAN address and a WAN address.

LAN - Local Area Network

Residences typically employ one LAN and connect to the Internet WAN via an ISP using a broadband . The ISP provides a WAN IP to the modem, and all of the computers on the home network use LAN (so-called private) IP addresses. All computers on the home LAN can communicate directly with each other but must go through a central gateway, typically broadband router to reach the ISP.

Web Servers

At its core, a Web server serves static content to a Web browser by loading a file from a disk and serving it across the network to a user's Web browser. The browser and server talking to each other using HTTP mediate this entire exchange.

Telnet Servers

A Telnet server enables users to log on to a host computer and perform tasks as if they're working on the remote computer itself.

Proxy Servers

Proxy servers sit between a client program typically a Web browser and an external server (typically another server on the Web) to filter requests, improve performance, and share connections.

News Servers

News servers act as a distribution and delivery source for the thousands of public news groups currently accessible over the USENET news network. USENET is a worldwide bulletin board system that can be accessed through the Internet or through many online services The USENET contains more than 14,000 forums called newsgroups that cover every imaginable interest group. It is used daily by millions of people around the world.

Mail Servers

Almost as ubiquitous and crucial as Web servers, mail servers move and store mail over corporate networks via LANs and WANs and across the Internet.

List Servers

List servers offer a way to better manage mailing lists, whether they are interactive discussions open to the public or one-way lists that deliver announcements, newsletters, or advertising.

IRC Servers

An option for those seeking real-time capabilities, Internet Relay Chat consists of various separate networks (or "nets") of servers that allow users to connect to each other via an IRC network.

Groupware Servers

A GroupWare server is software designed to enable users to collaborate, regardless of location, via the Internet or a corporate Intranet and to work together in a virtual atmosphere.

Fax Servers

A fax server is an ideal solution for organizations looking to reduce incoming and outgoing telephone resources but that need to fax actual documents.

A fax server is an ideal solution for organizations looking to reduce incoming and outgoing telephone resources but that need to fax actual documents.

Chat Servers

Chat servers enable a large number of users to exchange information in an environment similar to Internet newsgroups that offer real-time discussion capabilities. Real time means occurring immediately. The term is used to describe a number of different computer features. For example, real-time operating systems are systems that respond to input immediately. They are used for such tasks as navigation, in which the computer must react to a steady flow of new information without interruption. Most general-purpose operating systems are not real-time because they can take a few seconds, or even minutes, to react. Real time can also refer to events simulated by a computer at the same speed that they would occur in real life. In graphics animation, for example, a real-time program would display objects moving across the screen at the same speed that they would actually move.

Audio/Video Servers

Audio/Video servers bring multimedia capabilities to Web sites by enabling them to broadcast streaming multimedia content. Streaming is a technique for transferring data such that it can be processed as a steady and continuous stream. Streaming technologies are becoming increasingly important with the growth of the Internet because most users do not have fast enough access to download large multimedia files quickly. With streaming, the client browser or plug-in can starts displaying the data before the entire file has been transmitted. For streaming to work, the client side receiving the data must be able to collect the data and send it as a steady stream to the application that is processing the data and converting it to sound or pictures. This means that if the streaming client receives the data more quickly than required, it needs to save the excess data in a buffer If the data doesn't come quickly enough, however, the presentation of the data will not be smooth. There are a number of competing streaming technologies emerging. For audio data on the Internet, the de facto standard is Progressive Network's RealAudio.

Application Server

Sometimes referred to as a type of middleware, application servers occupy a large chunk of computing territory between database servers and the end user, and they often connect the two. Middle ware is a software that connects two otherwise separate applications For example, there are a number of middleware products that link a database system to a Web server This allows users to request data from the database using forms displayed on a Web browser and it enables the Web server to return dynamic Web pages based on the user's requests and profile.

What is Server Platform?

A term often used synonymously with operating system. A platform is the underlying hardware or software for a system and is thus the engine that drives the server.

Server?

A Server is a computer or device on a network that manages network resources. For example, a file server is a computer and storage device dedicated to storing files Any user on the network can store files on the server. Disable and Turn Off IPv6 Support in Vista/Windows 2008

IPv6 (Internet Protocol version 6) is the successor for IPv4, the current version of most popular network layer protocol for packet-switched internetworks used on the Internet. In Windows Vista, IPv6 is fully implemented and supported, is also installed and enabled by default, with full Internet Protocol security (IPsec) support for IPv6 traffic and Teredo tunneling support for non-IPv6 aware devices.

IPv6 is not common yet, as most software, routers, modems, and other network equipments does not support the emerging and future-proof protocol yet. Beside, turning off IPv6 support does not affect the functionality of Internet browsing for average users. Thus IPv6 and/or Teredo can and (quite likely) should be disabled if it’s not in use to conserve system resources. Unlike Windows XP, IPv6 in Windows Vista cannot be uninstalled, according to Microsoft. However, IPv6 can be disabled. The following guide will allow users to disable IPv6 on a specific connection of a network interface card.

1. Go to Network Connections folder (click on Start button, then right click on Network, select Properties, then click on “Manager network connections” on Tasks pane).
2. You should see various LAN, wireless, Bluetooth, high speed Internet, and other network connections available on the Vista computer with the network adapter description. Right click on the network connection that you want to disable the IPv6 interface and select “Properties”.

Click “Continue” on User Access Control permission request prompt.
3. Clear the check box next to the Internet Protocol version 6 (TCP/IPv6) component in the list under “This connection uses the following items” box.

Disable IPv6
4. Click OK when done.
5. To re-enable IPv6, tick back the check box.

This method disables IPv6 on the particular LAN interface and connection. For other network adapter or connection, users have to repeat the steps to disable IPv6. Beside, disable IPv6 also does not disable IPv6 on tunnel interfaces or the IPv6 loopback interface.

It’s also possible to disable IPv6 and/or Teredo via Vista system registry. The registry settings also allow users to selectively disable components and configure behaviors for IPv6 in Windows Vista.

1. Open Registry Editor (regedit).
2. Navigate to the following registry key branch:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\
Services\tcpip6\Parameters\
3. Create the following registry value (DWORD type):

DisabledComponents

Note that the name must be exactly as shown, including capitalization. DisabledComponents is set to 0 by default.
4. The DisabledComponents registry value is a bit mask that controls the following series of flags, starting with the low order bit (Bit 0). To determine the value of DisabledComponents for a specific set of bits, the process is complicated, were hexadecimal value is calculated from binary number of the bits in correct position. For convenient, the following table lists some common configuration combinations and the corresponding DWORD value of DisabledComponents.
Configuration combination DisabledComponents value
Disable all tunnel interfaces 0×1
Disable 6to4 0×2
Disable ISATAP 0×4
Disable Teredo 0×8
Disable Teredo and 6to4 0xA
Disable all LAN and PPP interfaces 0×10
Disable all LAN, PPP, and tunnel interfaces 0×11
Prefer IPv4 over IPv6 0×20
Disable IPv6 over all interfaces and prefer IPv4 to IPv6 0xFF

As seen from table above, to disable IPv6 support globally on all interface, set the value data for DisabledComponents to 000000FF, or simply FF. The registry entry will look like below:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip6\Parameters]
"DisabledComponents"=dword:000000ff
5. Restart the computer for changes to take effect.
6. To revert and enable IPv6, delete “DisabledComponents” registry key or set its registry value to 0.

Google Chrome 2 "Operating System"?

Google is developing an operating system (OS) for personal computers, in a direct challenge to market leader Microsoft and its Windows system.

Google Chrome OS will be aimed initially at small, low-cost netbooks, but will eventually be used on PCs as well.

Google said netbooks with Chrome OS could be on sale by the middle of 2010.

"Speed, simplicity and security are the key aspects of Google Chrome OS," the firm said in its official blog.

The operating system, which will run on an open source licence, was a "natural extension" of its Chrome browser, the firm said.

The news comes just months before Microsoft launches the latest version of its operating system, called Windows 7.

'Back to basics'

"We're designing the OS to be fast and lightweight, to start up and get you on to the web in a few seconds," said the blog post written by Sundar Pichai, vice-president of product management, and Google's engineering director Linus Upson.

Windows 7 Release

All in all, Windows 7 is shaping up well. It's a far more modest release than Vista was, but it's no worse for that. The new OS introduces a compelling combination of welcome innovations and much-needed polish, and that's exactly what Microsoft needs right now. Vista's foundation was solid, and Windows 7 just makes it better. Information about Windows 7 is preliminary and subject to change. Some product features of Windows 7, such as the ability to watch and record live TV or navigation through the use of "touch," may require advanced or additional hardware. The features and functionality you find in the pre-release product may not appear in the final version of Windows 7. If we change the software before it's released, we'll change this information accordingly. We're not making express or implied warranties with this information.

Virtualization

Virtualization is software technology which uses a physical resource such as a server and divides it up into virtual resources called virtual machines (VM's). Virtualization allows users to consolidate physical resources, simplify deployment and administration, and reduce power and cooling requirements. While virtualization technology is most popular in the server world, virtualization technology is also being used in data storage such as Storage Area Networks, and inside of operating systems such as Windows Server 2008 with Hyper-V.

Virtualization Advantages:

* Server consolidation
* Reduced power and cooling
* Green computing
* Ease of deployment and administration
* High availability and disaster recovery

Popular virtualization products include:

* VMware
* Microsoft Hyper-V
* Virtual Iron
* Xen

How Exchange Server database transactions work

The process that database transactions use is the same process used by all mailbox servers, regardless of whether or not continuous replication has been enabled. Database transactions are operations that prompt a database update. These updates can include operations like sending or receiving an email message, updating a calendar item or creating a new task.

Any time a database transaction occurs, the database page that the transaction is being performed against is read from the database file and copied to an area of the server's memory known as the ESE cache. Any updates to the database resulting from the current transaction are performed within the ESE cache but are not written directly to the database.

Cached database pages that have been updated but not written to disk are referred to as dirty pages. If additional transactions perform operations against dirty pages, then the operation is performed within the ESE cache. In such a case, Exchange uses a mechanism called the version store to make sure the database remains in a consistent state.

Next, the transaction is recorded in a transaction log file. Depending on the size of the transaction, this process may involve closing the current log file and starting another one. Because the log file is only 1 MB, Exchange may consider the excessively large transactions as multiple log files. Each time a log file reaches the 1 MB limit, it is closed and a new log file starts.

When a backup is running against an Exchange server, the contents of the log files are written to the database. At this point, the checkpoint file is advanced so that it references the oldest log file that has not yet been committed to the database.

Exchange 2007 Replication Introduction

The original RTM release of Exchange Server 2007 offered two different types of continuous replication: local continuous replication and cluster continuous replication. Local continuous replication provides a degree of fault tolerance on a single mailbox server. The basic premise is that LCR creates a secondary copy of an Exchange Server database on a separate volume than the server. In contrast, CCR uses a similar method to create a separate copy of the database and stores it on a separate Exchange server.

When Microsoft released Service Pack 1 for Exchange Server 2007, it introduced a third type of continuous replication known as standby continuous replication (SCR). SCR is similar to CCR; however, CCR can only create one replica of a protected database. SCR can create multiple replicas of a database.

Even though Exchange Server 2007 provides three different types of continuous replication, all three work in basically the same way. Continuous replication is based on a technique called log shipping, which involves copying each log file to the location where the backup database is stored while the log file is built. The log file is then replayed against the replica database, bringing the database into a current state.

Microsoft classifies continuous replication as a storage group-level operation, but I think it's more accurate to classify it as a database-level operation. Log files reside at the storage group level, but continuous replication, in any form, limits the protected storage group to a single database. Therefore, continuous replication could be considered a database-level operation because it involves a single database.
